More about me

Dr. Scott Waltman doesn't just practice modern CBT, he helps write its standards. He is President-Elect and a full Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies, a board member of the International Association of Cognitive Behavioral Therapies, Global Ambassador for the World Confederation of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies, and editor of the journal Advances in Cognitive Therapy. His board certification in Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology (ABPP) sits alongside training he did as a CBT trainer under an initiative established by Aaron Beck himself.

What trainees get from Dr. Waltman is a case-conceptualization-driven lens rather than a fixed protocol: he works from a strengths-based, solution-oriented, and culturally humble framework, and teaches clinicians to build an individualized treatment plan from that framework for whatever walks through the door. His two most recent books, co-authored with Trent Codd, are core reading for anyone he trains: Socratic Questioning for Therapists and Counselors (Routledge, 2020) and The Stoicism Workbook (New Harbinger, 2024), which brings Stoic philosophy into modern CBT practice.

Approach to supervision: One-on-one case consultation, built from the same case-conceptualization framework he teaches rather than generic protocol review, so trainees leave with a formulation they built themselves. He's also taught this directly in a recorded webinar for ABCT's eLearning platform, Socratic Dialogue and Collaborative Empiricism: Practical Strategies to Overcome Common Pitfalls.

‍"Scott has a real talent for stripping away the noise and identifying the core issue underlying a patient's presenting problem," in a style that's "very human and not cold or super textbook." (Internal trainer feedback, Sept 2026.)

Certifications: Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies (Fellow, Trainer, and Consultant); American Board of Professional Psychology (Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology)

His two books above are the tip of a much larger research record, over 20 peer-reviewed articles since 2011, most of it on CBT implementation, supervision, and training itself rather than a single clinical topic. A representative selection:
